A pioneer in the creative and scientific development of beauty products, visionary thought-leader, hair color authority and industry innovator, Leland has defined both his career and art by the search for “what should be that is not.”

Known in the industry as the “Hair Color Guru”, Leland’s affinity for glossy, editorial images was developed after decades working with amazing photographers, models, celebrities and beauty editors from the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s such as Shirley Lord and Dorothy Schefer (Vogue), Felicia Milewicz (Mademoiselle and Glamour), Lois Johnson (Ladies Home Journal) and many others. As the beauty editors’ “go-to” person for professional hair color and techniques, Leland provided commentary and visual concepts for what was new. He has an innate ability to interpret new ideas for editorials, and photography, connecting the idea to the consumer.

Born into a family of chemists, Leland has been surrounded by the beauty industry from an early age. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, he began his career as a hair color developmental consultant for Redken Laboratories and Logics/Clairol. In the 1980’s and 1990’s Leland revolutionized the hair color industry as the inventor of the Color Depositing Category and introduction of ARTec professional hair color, the FIRST semi-permanent, color depositing shampoos and conditioners. Leland’s other innovations included Enamels, Permanent Hair Color, Textureline, and Kiwi Shampoo. It became one of the most successful professional beauty companies and was acquired by L’Oréal Paris in 2002.

In 1986, Leland realized that dedicated colorists had nowhere to turn for serious, advanced, “sales-free” hair color education. His answer was Haircolor USA, an annual educational seminar strictly for hair color education, networking and professional development. HaircolorUSA, with Leland as Creative Director, welcomed more than 30,000 salon owners and colorists from around the world during its 15-year run.

In 2000, Leland joined industry icons, Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell and Horst Rechelbacher when he became the first hair color specialist to receive the North American Award’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Beauty Association.

Today Leland is often called the influencer’s, influencer as an industry thought leader, who for decades, modernized hair color with creative techniques and chemistry. From the 1960’s to today, he took the mechanics out of hair color techniques, creating organic abstraction of highlights and in the 1970’s he was the first to do vivid and pastel color that continues today. He has been called the original first influencer.

Leland is an adviser to beauty industry leaders and editors, presenting a modern perspective that challenges people to look at beauty and hair color differently. His affinity for art and creativity continues to be the passion that fuels his love of beauty and his vision for what will become the re-modernization and future of hair color.

In 2017, he seized the opportunity to fill a void in the industry, introducing Celeb Luxury, and the technological achievements of Viral and Gem Lites Colorwash and Colorditioners. Celeb Luxury is sold to salon professionals in over 30 countries globally and was recently voted #1 new products of the year worldwide at Cosmoprof Bologna. It is also the top selling color depositing shampoo in the US, Europe and on Amazon.
